Someone once said “If you don’t know where you’re going, you will never get there.” That quote applies to just about everything including home security. Implied in the quote is if you don’t have a plan or strategy, nothing will ever happen.
When it comes to home security that is particularly true. If you do not have a strategy more than likely you’ll end up with none. So here we will discuss the basics of the home security strategy in the hopes that you can learn from these tips and apply them to your own situation.
A strategy for your home’s security is important these days because home burglary continues to plague every city and state in the country.
At the basis of all strategies is doing the simple things first. In this case, for home security we advise that you begin with the free and simple things first.
These would include removing all potential hiding places around lower-level doors and windows. In normal circumstances, those would provide excellent hiding places for crooks who do most of their work during daylight hours.
Then we would recommend that you lock all doors and windows even when you’re at home. A surprising 60% of all home burglaries happen through unlocked doors and windows.
Next start or join an existing neighborhood watch program. They are free and anyone at your local police department can direct you to their expert on getting one going.
Most police departments will do a free home security evaluation of your house if you ask them and if they have the time and the manpower availability to do one.
Then, in building a home security strategy, consider adding low-cost alarms to all your doors and windows. These inexpensive tools act as excellent burglar alarms.
You might also consider adding fake security cameras. When burglars see a security camera around the home they tend to leave it alone.
Put some signs in your front yard that warn of a vicious guard dog or a security/surveillance system in place. You don’t even necessarily need the dog or the security system, sometimes just the sign alone will do.
As time and financial resources become available, you may want to add a real security system or real surveillance cameras to your strategy.
If you follow these steps, you’ll have a great security plan that is well thought out and based on a hierarchy of needs.
