Gun Safe Standards – DOJ & the Republic Series Gun Safes

Handgun security and rifle security are big concerns to homeowners. That makes sense because they are expensive and high-value targets for burglars. And home burglary happens way too often with nearly 20% of all homes the targets of burglars. That’s why home security is on the minds of all home owners but especially gun owners. For that reason and others the Department of Justice has issued guidelines for gun safes.

Among other things they mandate that gun safes have a “locking system with a mechanical or electronic combination lock with at least 10,000 possible combinations with three numbers, letters or symbols.” They require that the lock be protected by a drill resistant steel plate.

There must be a “minimum of three steel locking bolts of at least a half inch thickness that intrude from the door of the safe into the body of the safe.” DOJ also specifies that exterior walls be constructed of a minimum of 12gauge thick steel and the doors be constructed of a minimum of two layers of 12gauge steel and that door hinges be protected to prevent the removal of the door. That protection “shall include, but not be limited to, hinges not exposed to the outside interlocking door designs, dead bars, jewelers slugs and active or inactive locking bolts.”

The Republic series hunting rifle safes by Hollon come in sizes that can carry 16, 22, 39 or 45 rifles. They have an upgraded brass package and are fireproof rated for one hour at 1250 degrees F. They all offer a heat activated expandable intumescent door that offers protection against moisture and smoke damage. The lock is a UL listed LaGard Group II combination dial lock with a 5 spoke handle for ultimate security.

They have seven active chrome plated solid steel live locking bolts on the door and three fixed locking bolts on the hinge side. There is an active spring-loaded relocker to prevent punch attacks and a quarter inch solid steel plate added to the entire door for pry bar resistance. The door is 5 inches thick. The lock is protected by a drill/ballistic resistant armored hard plate.

The interior measurements are 56″ x 19.5″ x 10″ for the 16 Rifle Safe and it weighs 400 pounds with two small removable shelves and a full-length adjustable shelf. There are pre-drilled mounting holes so you can use the anchor bolt hardware to secure the safe to a building.
