The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence released statistics recently showing that 25% of all women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives and that 1.3 million women are assaulted physically by an intimate partner every year. Eighty six percent of abuse victims were at the hands of a boyfriend.
Another alarming statistic that the stats showed is “intimate partners, which includes husbands, former husbands, boyfriends or ex-boyfriends committed 26% of all rapes and sexual assaults and that 45% of all violent attacks against females 12 years old and older were committed by people they knew.”
Recently a very high-profile marriage broke up because of alleged domestic violence. The spouse undertook a dramatic escape plan using disposable cell phones, secret meetings and money exchanges with multiple contacts across the country-all to get out of the relationship safely. This particular spouse has lots of resources at her disposal which is unlike the vast majority of victims.
Statistics also show that boys who see domestic violence in their youth are twice as likely to abuse their partners and children when they become adults which gives ground to the theory that this is a learned trait.
The cost of domestic violence every year according to the coalition “exceeds $5.8 billion most of which is for direct medical and medical health services.”
Unless you’re the wife of a celebrity or have unlimited resources you won’t be able to take the evasive steps we discussed above. But it is incumbent upon all women who are in a domestic violence situation to develop a plan, an escape plan, if you will, to assure your personal safety and personal security. Part of that plan may involve friends, relatives, fellow churchgoers, neighbors or even co-workers.
There are resources available in terms of shelters that should be investigated. Just bear in mind that because of the scope of the problem shelters are often full and not capable of taking more “refugees.”
Another part of the plan should include developing a way to defend yourself against further attacks. That’s where self-defense products come into play. They are an effective way to ward off an attack and incapacitate an assailant for up to 45 minutes giving you time to escape to seek help or just to escape. They can help ensure your personal safety and personal security.
Those are some items to consider when you develop an escape plan from a domestic violence situation.
