Most Popular Affordable Home Security Systems

I saw a statistic last week that caught my eye. The statistic was from a home security company which made me a little bit skeptical. The statistic claims that homes without home security systems were 300% more likely or three times more likely to get burglarized than those with one.

I do know this, that the home security industry is alive and well. Companies that sell monitored or unmonitored home security systems seem to do very well financially and they make up the bulk of the burgeoning $60 billion a year industry. But the fact of the matter is you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a home security system to improve your home’s protection.

There are lots of tools out there that you can use that are less expensive than a complete system that frequently can do the job of preventing a burglary. Here we are going to discuss some of the most popular home security tools so you can see if you like any of them for your home. Then if you still want to get a security system anyhow, go ahead.

The most popular inexpensive security tools are motion activated alarms. Generally speaking they are inexpensive and can protect an area up to 1000 square feet although usually less. They offer a variety of ways to detect motion, but usually it’s passive infrared resistance or PIR which is similar to radar. If motion is detected in the protected area, a loud alarm sounds. The most famous of these is the barking dog alarm. Not only does it make a loud noise, but it sounds just like a barking dog, which scares the living daylights out of anybody. That’s why it’s so effective.

The least expensive security tools for your home are simple window and/or door alarms. A good example of one is a magnetic window/door alarm that works like this. “The base of the alarm is bolted to door or window frame, the actuator is connected to the window or door. The 110 db alarm is triggered by opening the door or window, particularly those hard to protect sliding glass doors.”

You don’t have to spend a fortune to improve the security of your home. Simple window and door alarms and perhaps a motion activated alarm in a room or two of your house can work just as well as a much more expensive complete security system.
