Pepper Sprays In Action
The practical side of self-defense products is whether or not they work. Here are several examples of self-defense stories that show how pepper sprays, in particular, are an effective deterrent to crime.
The first story occurs in Denver in an area called LoDo, a euphemism for lower downtown, a once decaying part of downtown that has been revitalized into a trendy and vibrant part of the city.
The victim saw two men standing by an elevator in a parking garage when she walked in. It was 1:45 in the morning. When she got into the elevator the two men followed her. She got off the elevator on the third floor and the men followed her to her car. When she got to her car one man pushed her inside and climbed on top of her and tried to sexually assault her. She pulled out her keychain pepper spray, sprayed the man and fought him off.
This attempted sexual assault was viewed on the garage’s security video and showed the suspect following the woman to the elevator and later showed the same man going to an SUV. That’s where police got his license plate number and tracked down the owner.
In another example in San Diego, California, police are on the lookout for a man who has attacked and tried to sexually assault women on four separate occasions. In each of the cases the assailant jumped the victim from behind after she arrived home late at night. In this case the woman pepper sprayed the assailant. Police are still looking for the suspect.
The third case reported by the Chicago Tribune, a woman managed to use pepper spray to fend off a potential parking lot attack. The victim was getting out of her car in the parking lot near her house when the assailant tried to pull her from the car. The pepper spray sent him scurrying. Police are still looking for him but have a good description.
