Self-Defense Pepper Guns-Comparing Three Models

David Artman |

For anyone who is familiar with nonlethal self-defense products, they know that pepper spray is by far and away the most popular and most widely used of all of them. As a testament to its effectiveness, every law enforcement officer in the country carries pepper spray on his utility belt.

Most pepper sprays have a range of 10 feet or less so they are a short range solution for personal safety. The other limitation is that under most conditions, a slight wind can blow the spray off course thus diminishing the effectiveness of the product.

In this article we will compare three models of self-defense pepper guns so you can see how they address these two problems. They are much more expensive than normal pepper sprays but when it comes to your personal safety it may very well be worth the extra cost.

The first one which has been around for a long time is the Mace pepper gun that shoots as many as seven shots up to 25 feet away using a replaceable cartridge with a full strength 10% solution of oleoresin capsicum. It is the least expensive of all pepper guns at $55.95. It has a built-in trigger activated LED light for aiming assistance.

The newest entry into the marketplace is the Tippmann Pepper Ball Gun that sells for $279. It can fire as many as seven rounds from a self-locking, seven ball magazine clip up to 50 feet away. When the ball explodes on impact it creates a cloud of caustic dust that inflicts tremendous pain, impairs vision and causes respiratory distress to the assailant. It is powered by a 12 gram CO2 cartridge that fires with such force that it doesn’t blow off course. Like all other pepper spray products, they are legal everywhere except in Hawaii, Michigan, New York and Wisconsin.

And the third pepper gun self-defense product is the JPX Pepper Gun that sells for $349.95. It fires a pepper cartridge up to 405 miles an hour eliminating any concern for wind problems blowing it off course. It has a range of 23 feet and uses a full 10% concentration of oleoresin capsicum with an astonishing 2.4% major capsaicinoid content which is as potent as any pepper spray in the world.

When it comes to your personal safety and self-defense, pepper guns are one of the most effective because they can shoot from a longer range than normal pepper sprays and are not affected by windy conditions. These three models are among the best.
