Little-Known Self Defense Items That Can Save Your Life

Self-defense items such as stun guns, pepper sprays and personal alarms get all the publicity. You have to be living under a rock not to have heard of the stun device called taser that is carried by over 12,000 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. alone. Pepper spray is the most widely used and publicized self-defense item in the world.

Here are some little known, easy to use and cheap self-defense items that can save your life.

The kubotan has been used in the martial arts for decades. It is a small 5 1/2 inch long piece of metal, usually aluminum, which is used for attacks in self-defense. It is held in “either an ice pick grip (for hammer fist strikes) or forward grip (for stabbing and pressure point attacks)..It can be used for gaining leverage on an assailant’s wrist, fingers and joints.”

They can commonly be used in any place a finger can be used for striking. Police officers have been known to grab a suspect around the neck and stick the kubotan in the small of his back to gain compliance to a lawful order.

Because it is made of metal it is much more rigid than a finger. A poke in the eye with a kubotan will gain immediate submission.

Others include Blue Cat and Brutus brands of ridged knuckles with pointed cat ears that add power to your strikes in the event of an attack. They are easy to use with two holes that you slip your fingers through for easy access from your key chain.

Another is the key chain attachment with steel impact tips that comes in both black and silver. This is another variation of molded knuckles that enhance the power of a strike.

A unique one is the Kubotan Pen with ferro rod. It is a fully functional black ink ballpoint pen inside a kubotan that can be used to “inflict temporary paralysis or extreme pain when delivered to pressure points or soft tissue in the body. It is 6.1 inches long and is made by Smith & Wesson and is an example of a tactical, survival pen. It can be used to start fires and as a self-defense weapon.”

Even without martial arts experience it is easy to learn how to use this little-known self-defense weapon. Hip bones, shins, arms, collar bones, ankles and kneecaps are all good targets. Because it’s on a key chain it can be swung with great force. There is no wrong way to use it. Just hit the assailant as hard as you can on almost any part of his body.
