Burglar Proof Your Home and Prevent Break-Ins

If you own a home, town home or condominium, or even rent one you should be concerned about your home security. Why? For the vast majority of Americans your home is your biggest asset you have worth nearly $200,000 plus the value of your furnishings personal belongings which adds at least another $75,000. For anyone that’s a sizable investment that deserves your attention.

Another reason why you should be concerned about your home security is because close to 20% of all homes on an annual basis will be the victims of burglary. So nearly one out of five homes will be targeted by a burglar.

When they go looking for homes to burglarize, they check out a neighborhood in a process called “casing” where they take a critical look at the outside of the house and determine whether it’s vulnerable. Sadly, most homes are.

Here are some things you can do that are either free or at very low-cost that can improve your home security and burglar proof your home.

Basically what you want to do is send a signal or a sign to the would-be burglar to stay away from your house and pick on somebody else. How do you do that? One of the best ways is to get a home security sign that warns of a vicious guard dog. You don’t even need a dog. The sign alone will do it because that’s what he’s looking for. He’s looking for external weaknesses in the house, and burglars hate dogs more than anything else.

A burglar will then look to see if there are any surveillance or security cameras around the house. After all, he doesn’t want to get caught. So if he sees a security camera say from street level, he is far enough away from your house that he can’t tell a fake security camera from the real thing, especially when the fake security cameras have blinking red lights and some of them even rotate around. You can get fake security cameras for a fraction of the cost of the real thing and improve your home security.

Remove potential hiding places around lower-level doors and windows. Since most burglaries are committed during the daytime burglars look for places to hide and conceal their whereabouts until they find a window that’s open to break in.

And the last thing that we would suggest is that you keep all doors and windows locked even when you’re at home. It’s a proven statistic that 60% of all home burglaries happen through unlocked doors and windows.

Follow these tips and you will go a long way toward burglar proofing your home and increasing your home security, thus protecting your investment.
