Why Non Lethal Self Defense Items Are So Effective
Ever since the beginning of recorded history man has searched for an effective nonlethal way to defend himself. From sticks and stones in pre-biblical times to bags of hot spices being thrown at enemies by the Chinese nearly 2000 years ago, a nonlethal way to improve personal security and personal safety has always been the preferred method.
Self-defense items that are nonlethal by nature are immensely popular today especially for female self-defense because women are victims of crime 90% of the time. They are also popular for use by law enforcement. Over 12,000 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. carry tasers, for example. The United States Postal Service issues pepper sprays to all letter carriers for defense against dog attacks.
Here’s a summary of all the nonlethal self-defense items and why they are so effective.
First on the list are pepper sprays. They are the most widely used self-defense item in the world. They are on average 86% effective. The resin of one of the hottest peppers in the world forms the basis for pepper sprays. This resin is called oleoresin capsicum or OC for short. It is commonly dispensed in the form of spray but foam and gel can also be used. When it comes in contact with the skin it causes intense pain. When sprayed in the face it causes severe tearing of the eyes, coughing, choking and difficulty breathing. It is the least expensive of all self-defense items, which accounts for part of its popularity. The effects can last as long as 45 minutes.
Next are stun guns, which are hand held devices with two or more prongs on one end which conduct an electrical charge between them. When it is applied to an assailant it basically short-circuits the body’s electrical system causing the body to over work very rapidly, which depletes the body of all needed blood sugars. The assailant has no energy left to do anything. The effects can last as long as 10 minutes. They are on average close to 90% effective.
Personal alarms are very popular, especially for female self-defense. They are also called panic alarms in some circles. They are loud noisemakers that emit ear piercing sounds when activated. This draws attention to your situation and can often scare away an assailant.
Tasers are a form of stun device but use low-voltage and high wattage to disable an assailant by overriding the central nervous system. In independent tests they have been shown to have near 100% effectiveness and more stopping power than a popular handgun.
The popular pink Taser C2 is the most popular taser for female self-defense.
