Defenseless Children Are Dog Attack Victims
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Stats “The injury rate (from dog attacks) was highest for children aged 5–9 years and decreased with increasing age.”
The CDC goes on to say that an estimated 4.7 million dog bites occurred in the United States, and approximately 799,700 persons required medical care.
In all the time that we have been writing about dog attacks and dog bites, we have never focused on children as victims. Here we are changing that! Dog attacks and dog bites are especially dangerous for children because they are literally defenseless. Today we will share stories on this topic to help raise awareness.
Our first story comes to us from the province of Ontario in Canada where two people have been arrested in connection with a dog attack on a small child. According to the story, the attack occurred in the child’s home. The dog has since been put down.
This story comes to us from the Baltimore, Md. area where the local police chief has suspended dog adoptions at the local animal shelter because of a dog biting a child’s face that has left the community and the child’s family horrified. According to the story, the family told police that the boy was playing with the animal that was adopted by them earlier that day, when they heard a noise. When they entered the room they saw the dog biting the child’s face and head. That dog was taken into custody and euthanized later that day.
From the Duluth, Minnesota area comes this story about two different dog attacks. In the first incident a dog walking off leash attacked a 13-year-old boy. In a separate incident a family dog is confined to a shelter after the dog bit the child’s face while they were at home. While a dog may be considered a man’s best friend, it has instincts that are deep-rooted leaving even playful puppies to become aggressive. Dogs are territorial by nature and have the instincts to bite. The dog that attacked a small child and bit its face will have to be euthanized.
In the Chesapeake Bay area in Virginia two dogs attacked a little girl who was celebrating her seventh birthday. The little girl was outside playing when the dogs attacked and bit her in the neck. The bite was so severe that the little girl had to be airlifted to a local hospital.
Dogs should not be allowed to run off leash in neighborhoods or trails because they could be perceived as a threat to an innocent passerby. And never, ever leave a dog, even your family pet, alone in a room with a small child.
