Aging Parents and Elder Care – Watching Over Your Parents

“As the year 2011 began on Jan. 1, the oldest members of the Baby Boom generation celebrated their 65th birthday. In fact, on that day and for every day for the next 19 years, 10,000 baby boomers will reach age 65.” Baby boomers will drastically change just about everything in the United States because they will comprise over 25% of the total US population.

That will place enormous strain on everything from nursing homes, to extended care facilities, the Social Security system and fast food restaurants. Everything geared towards the consumer will have to reflect this huge market.

At some point in your life, if one or both of your parents are still alive, you will be faced with the decision as to how to care for them. Many people are opting for home healthcare providers providing live-in or daily care, while others opt for a long-term care facility or a nursing home. Either way is no easy answer. Nor is any answer inexpensive.

But aside from that, a more intriguing question is the quality of care. With this enormous flux of people into a system that wasn’t really ready for them in the first place-there is a shortage of facilities and a shortage of qualified people to work in those facilities-it places the seniors at risk of abuse in just about any facility.

Domestic abuse of our senior citizens-called elder abuse-is rapidly becoming a severe issue in just about every state in the country.

One option that has started to gain some traction is home healthcare with either a live-in or daytime care provider. The parents prefer this option because it keeps them in familiar surroundings. If you can find a qualified care provider, it may end up being a little bit cheaper as well since many insurance companies are now covering this kind of care.

But anyway you do it, elder abuse is lurking in the sidelines. How do you keep an eye on your aging parents to ensure that they are not being taken advantage of and that they are being cared for in a manner that you wish?

One way is to install a surveillance camera in their home that has Internet protocol capability. It doesn’t even have to be a hidden camera, a regular surveillance camera will do. It’s the software that hooks you up to the Internet, allowing you to see what the camera sees from your location, whether it’s halfway around the world or on the other side the city.

If something untoward is happening to your parents and they are being abused in any way, you will be able to see it and take appropriate action.
