The Scoville Heat Units (SHU) scale was devised by Wilbur Scoville in 1912 as a measure of the hotness of a chile pepper.
The SHU scale in regards to pepper spray indicates the amount of oleoresin capsicum (OC) present, but more importantly the heat and thus irritation the pepper spray delivers.
Pepper spray comes in variety of dilution percentages generally between 2% to 18% featuring Scoville Heat Units (SHU) from Mace 2 million SHU to Fox Labs 5.3 million SHU.
When seconds count, it is our contention, the hotter the SHU rating of the pepper spray, the better the results.
A one second blast of Mace 2 million SHU to the face of an assailant will induce immediate coughing, choking and nausea as well as dilating the eye capillaries resulting in diminished vision. In addition, Mace 2 million SHU pepper spray causes the attackers mucous membranes to swell resulting in difficulty in breathing and causes an intense burning skin sensation.
The Fox Labs 5.3 million SHU pepper spray will deliver even more accelerated and stronger results. In addition, a higher rated SHU pepper spray will require less accuracy in the delivery of the spray during an attack. A one second blast of Fox Labs 5.3 million SHU pepper spray delivers you from harms way and can affect an attacker for up to 60 minutes without causing permanent damage.
Massachusetts: Massachusetts residents may only purchase defense sprays from licensed Firearms Dealers in that state.
Michigan: OC Pepper spray can be no stronger then a 2% concentrate (Different companies can sell different concentrations.) CS is the only Tear Gas accepted and can be no larger then 35 grams per can. No combination spray allowed. Mace Dog Repellent Spray and Mace Bear Repellent spray are legal.
New York: New York residents may only purchase defense sprays from licensed Firearms Dealers or licensed Pharmacists in that state. Mace Dog Repellent Spray and Mace Bear Repellent spray are legal.
Wisconsin: Tear gas is not permissible. By regulation, OC products with a maximum OC concentration of 10% and weight range of oleoresin of capsicum and inert ingredients of 15-60 grams are authorized. This is 1/2 oz. and 2 oz. spray. Further, the product cannot be camouflaged, and must have a safety feature designed to prevent accidental discharge. The units may not have an effective range of over 20 feet and must have an effective range of six feet. In addition there are certain labeling and packaging requirements: must state cannot sell to anyone under 18 and the phone number of the manufacturer has to be on the label. The units must also be sold in sealed tamper-proof packages. Dog Repellent Spray and Bear Repellent spray are legal.
NOTE:Although Mace Pepper Spray is legal in all 50 states, however a number of cities and states have restrictions on sizes and strengths. If you have a question or concern, it is wise to check with your local city or state attorneys office. Mace defense pepper sprays should only be purchased by those 18 years of age or older.

To return an item, please call us toll free at 1-800-490-9471 to secure a Return Authorization (RA) number. All RA requests must be made within 90 days post item delivery. Before a credit is issued, the item must be returned and received by us. We do not refund shipping costs, or refund the cost of your return shipping. If your item is received in brand new condition and has not been used, we will refund 100% of your item cost. Items returned in used condition or with packaging that cannot be resealed are subject to a 25% restocking fee.
